What our employees say about us
“ …a really insightful experience, and I learnt a lot about the practical aspects of environmental assessment. It gave me a chance to see how the different disciplines worked together at the company, it's also given me several potential subjects to focus on for the future.”
I first joined Mayer Brown when I was 25, looking to broaden my engineering experience. I was soon given engineering projects to run, and the responsibility I was seeking. I feel that Mayer Brown as a company is good at recognising peoples’ qualities and building on their capabilities, which has enabled me to build my experience and expertise with fantastic support from a talented team. I returned to Mayer Brown this year following seven years working in wildlife conservation, happy and confident that I’ll be stimulated in the projects I’m working on and given the opportunities to apply my broadened experience.
Gail Turney, Principal Engineer
Since starting at Mayer Brown as a Graduate Engineer approximately 3 years ago I have gained a vast range of experience from undertaking Flood Risk Assessments and the detailed design of surface and foul water drainage networks (including SuDS) to undertaking modelling work using Civil 3D and Microdrainage. I was promoted to Engineer in April 2016 and over the last 3 years have had many opportunities to visit construction sites and have recently been assisting with the external works supervision associated with a £12million factory development.
In addition to the above Mayer Brown sponsored me to undertake an MSc programme in Management in Construction at Kingston University in which I recently graduated with distinction.
As well as the work related opportunities I also partake in regular social activities including away days to Paris, regular sporting activities and evenings out (e.g. horse racing meetings, badminton, squash etc.).
So far my time at Mayer Brown has been invaluable in my Professional, Academic and Personal achievements and most importantly it has been enjoyable.
Working abroad has always been something I wanted to do after graduating in Italy. I sent my CV to a number of civil engineering companies across the UK, and I was glad when Mayer Brown showed interest in my profile.
When I first joined the company in the Birmingham planning office, I was glad to find very friendly people and very professional at the same time. As a foreign person, that helped me a lot overcome the language barrier that one may encounter when working in a foreign country.
I was then offered the opportunity to join the Design team in the company head office in Woking where I am currently working as a Graduate Engineer. I am highly satisfied with the progress I have made so far, both in terms of communication skills and technical knowledge, and I owe great part of it to my colleagues who are always very supportive. I think that a great deal of a person’s success is to be found in the people he works with and in the everyday working environment. These are two things that stimulate me to work hard every day and that I feel very lucky to have found in MB.
As this were not enough, they have introduced me to badminton, a sport that I now play regularly and enjoy a lot, and that is also funded by the Sport and Social Club (SSC), which is a great initiative to socialise with colleagues of other teams and to get out of the office to enjoy some exercise or to take part to a number of social events, like trips to cinema, horse races, in-house lunches.
Mayer Brown is a company that doesn’t treat its staff as just another commodity, but provides and facilitates each member into becoming a better version of themselves; be that professionally or personally. As soon as I started on the Graduate Scheme, I instantly enjoyed the level of responsibility they gave me. Within a couple of months, I was phoning clients, managing projects and taking a more hands-on role compared to what I would of received at other companies.
In addition to the great level of responsibility they offer, it is also one of the few companies left that really look after their staff. Since joining, Mayer Brown has paid for me to play badminton twice a week, attend cinema nights and the monthly lunch time meals. They also provide flexible working times and encourage me to undertake training courses in a range of different subjects, something which I know is rare in this economic climate. Knowing the fact that half my colleagues have been here for more than 7 years really speaks for itself.
I started working at Mayer Brown as a graduate, and I’ve really enjoyed working in a smaller office environment than you’d find in a big consultancy. This allows better working relationships between members of staff, as well as more direct contact with clients than I’d get at this level in a big company, thereby enhancing my skills in meeting client expectations and requirements.
