Urban Design & Regeneration
Experienced Staff
Mayer Brown can provide skilled staff, with UK and mainland Europe Home Zone experience. Our aim is to ensure your scheme is a success. Our staff have been at the forefront of traffic engineering emerging from Denmark and The Netherlands, creating ambiguity and uncertainty to reduce speeds, encourage eye contact and integrate drivers into the social realm of the street.
Overcoming apathy can be challenging but it is vital to achieve success
Awareness of Potential Challenges
Home Zones offer designers freedom to create austere village junctions but also rustic and idyllic streets, no longer based on the turning circles of vehicles. Mayer Brown is familiar with this fundamentally new approach of seamless co-ordination of trafficengineering with architecture, urban design and landscape architecture. The new language of street design includes sandpits, sleepers, concretepipes and odds and ends, becoming skilled in slowing cars and extending the public domain into the traffic zone. It requires designs very carefully planned for each specific location, taking local circumstances as a starting point.
Balancing aspirations with budgets
Mayer Brown staff understand the competing issues of Home Zone design. Mayer Brown’s Home Zone team can provide the expertise to ensure that informed decision making and project guidance are available for your project. We aspire to streets where children and the elderly can cross safely, where we invite children to play with their friends on the other side of the road and to achieve this by dramatically changing traffic behaviour.
Innovation and Deliverability
Many elements of a streetscape combine to create a successful Home Zone scheme. The consultants at Mayer Brown are experienced in working closely with Local Authority departments, stakeholders and local residents to aid this process. We employ lessons from design psychology to influence behaviour through the deliberate mixing of different types of road users, applying subtle visual design solutions, replacing signs and street markings, requiring all users to interact and negotiate.
The importance of public participation
Success requires the participation of local residents of all ages and backgrounds. When residents have a sense of ownership to a scheme, it can provide long term benefits. Mayer Brown can provide experienced staff to complete projects that require in-depth public participation. We provide Clients with a large range of consultation techniques. We are used to dealing with hearts and minds consultation processes, addressing issues such as perceived confusion by the absence of familiar road markings or conventional controls. We reconcile the needs of people and demands for vehicle movements using the potential to return streets to the social fabric of urban areas.
