Community-Based Street Scene Audits

Project Section:

Transport Planning & Infrastructure Design

Client:

Wiltshire County Council

Scheme Objectives:

Wiltshire County Council wanted to develop a community-based approach for assessing the quality of the town centre street scene in the County’s twenty market towns, in order to:

  • Identify potential improvements to the local street scene.
  • ‘Benchmark’ the towns and assist in resource allocation.
  • Ensure that initiatives were well-supported by the local community.
  • Co-ordinate the various agencies involved.
  • Monitor progress over time in improving the street scene.

Mayer Brown’s Role:
Mayer Brown were commissioned to develop the audit methodology for Wiltshire’s towns. We reviewed UK best practice, and consulted officers throughout the County who were working with the local street scene - e.g.urban designers, community planners, transport planners and engineers.

We then developed a methodology for community-led street scene audits that was practical, cost-effective, well-integrated with existing programmes and replicable.
