The historic market town of Amesbury, near Stonehenge, is undergoing rapid change, with possible tunnelling under the A303, a new Stonehenge Visitor Centre, and one of the largest business parks in the south of England.
Wiltshire County Council have initiated a town centre transport study to examine the transport issues facing the town centre and have developed proposals to improve its environment and accessibility, particularly for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.
Public consultation was a key part of the study.
Mayer Brown’s Role:
Mayer Brown was commissioned to carry out the project.
The first phase involved developing a transport strategy for the town centre, and various schemes in outline. A stakeholder workshop helped to ensure that the proposals were locally supported.
The second phase of the study involved developing the proposals in more detail, checking the alternative options, costing them, and then further consultations with stakeholders.
The proposals focussed on streetscape improvements in a conservation area setting, with better access for pedestrians and cyclists while still maintaining vehicular access and parking.
