Project Section:

Transport Planning & Infrastructure Design

Client:

Lancaster City Council

Scheme Objectives:

Highways consultant Mayer Brown was commissioned to create a strategy which improved cycling permeability within Lancaster City Centre, through a network of fast, safe and comfortable routes. The strategy would ensure an auditable evidence based approach to investment in the cycle network.

Mayer Brown’s Role:

The project involved undertaking the following transport planning and highway engineering tasks:
• Identification of existing cycle use within Lancaster city centre;
• Establishing key utility trip attractors (now and in the future) and key desire lines to and through Lancaster city centre;
• Identifying requirements and potential cycle improvements for the city centre and at key local destinations such as the Rail Station;
• Reviewing cycle parking facilities within Lancaster city centre;
• Provision and preliminary design of proposed cycle routes;
• Providing a program of works reflecting short, medium and long term objectives;
• Conduct stakeholder consultations including postal questionnaires, "hands on’’ design meetings and leaflet drops.
The successful strategy is now implemented with cycle infrastructure on the ground and increasing numbers of cycle trips.
